A well-painted red figure ware bell krater with restrained use of white slip detailing; laurel motif encircling rim; wave motif along groundline; tongues around handles; palmette complex beneath either handle. Side A: showing the figure of a female facing right, holding a coffer in her left hand and a thyrsus in her right, draped in a chiton, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos, a scarf draped over her left arm; opposite, a seated naked male youth holding a budding branch in his right hand. Side B: two confronting male figures wraped in himatia, both wearing bandeaux and leaning on long staffs flanking a central column with a scarf around, with a casket and ivy leaf in the field. -

Attributed to the Stuttgart group, a ceramic red figure ware oinochoe with pedestal base, mastoid body, funicular neck and trefoil spout; the handle a broad ribbed strap; the body depicting a reclining female in a girdled chiton with her hair in a beribboned kekryphalos, supporting a rectangular casket in her right hand, patterned situla in her left, surrounded by rosettes, dotted sprays and a patterned scarf in the field, with palmette to the rear; restricted use of white and ochre points; ovolo motifs in ochre to the neck with white slash motifs above; at the junction of handle and spout, a human mask with painted palmette above. -

Anglo-Saxon Zoomorphic 'Bird-Head Lappets' Cruciform Brooch

A large cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of evolved type, the headplate formed as a rectangular plate with trapezoidal wings and a D-shaped flat tab to each edge, each with two impressed roundels and outer knop as a stylised face; the lateral edges of the headplate decorated with two rows of punched-point detail found also on the lower edges of the tabs and the outer edges of the wings; the bow broad and deep, with facetted ends; the footplate trapezoidal with linear borders and punched-point detail, flanked by bird-head lappets; the finial comprising a transverse ribbed collar with horsehead motif formed from raised pellet eyes developing to an opposed pair of animal heads with a peltoid plate below; to the reverse, the pin-lug and catchplate in place; the pin lost in antiquity. -
