Egyptian Fine Black Serpentine Shabti

An extremely fine and rare black serpentine shabti, depicted in mummiform pose with the arms folded across the chest, agricultural implements in the hands, a seed bag across the back; to the face, large, almond-shaped eyes and an enigmatic slight smile; wearing a striated tripartite wig and wesekh collar; the body inscribed with six lines of hieroglyphic text comprising a shortened version of Chapter Six of 'The Book of the Dead' (the 'shabti' chapter), separated by a wider central column to the front; an image of Isis, winged and seated, to the centre, two wedjat eyes above her wings; inscriptions for 'the illuminated one', 'Iri ka'. -

A fine and large volute krater of Magna Graecian workmanship; to one side, the head of a lady of fashion, her hair dressed in a sakkos with stephane at the hairline; locks falling to frame the face; flanked by large palmettes; below, a band of running wave patterning; the shoulder red, with pattern of vertical trails in black; to the neck, a palmette between two scrolling motifs; a foliate band below the rim enlivened with dots of ochre slip; the everted rim with a pendant wave pattern to the underside; the exterior rim red with vertical black trails; to the opposite side, an image of Hermaphroditus, nude, seated on a low draped stool; a large kylix in one hand; his feminine hair dressed in a sakkos; his large wings ornately decorated with white and ochre detailing, the feathers delineated in grey; flanked by two large palmettes; to the neck, the head of a lady of fashion, her hair similarly dressed in a sakkos with stephane, curls framing the face; flanked by scrolling palmettes; below the rim, a row of six rosettes, all of individual design; above, a pattern of alternating pellets and pairs of trails; to the underside of the rim, a pendant wave pattern in black against a red backround; the exterior rim with wave pattern enlived with pale slip; the tall strap handles flanked by loops fashioned as arching swan heads; surmounted by volutes with white and yellow painted mascaroons styled as heads of Medusa on the front, the snakes in white slip, and reserved mascaroons on the reverse. -

An impressive Magna Graecian red-figure ceramic basin or serving bowl, similar to a stemless kylix in profile; with a short, circular pedestal foot; the bowl decorated to the interior rim with a delicately painted undulating pattern of white flowers; to the centre, in red, the image of a seated woman, holding a sceptre or ornate mirror in her right hand, wearing a diaphanous peplos and white shoes, a string of beads to the neck; her hair dressed in a decorated sakkos; a small tree in the foreground; the exterior of the bowl with, to one side, a scene of a woman similarly dressed, also with a sceptre or mirror in her hand, seated to face Hermaphroditus, an alabastron in his left hand, handing her a string of beads; his wings with white highlights and feathers delineated in black; wearing bracelets and anklets, the feminine hair dressed in a sakkos; to the left, a standing woman wearing a peplos, leaning against a column; her arms outstretched; a platter in her right hand, a scarf or ribbon in her left; the figures flanked by groups of three palmettes; to the opposite side, Hermaphroditus, striding, carrying an ornate fan and sceptre or mirror; turning to face him, a female, perhaps Demeter, diaphanously draped, carrying a staff topped with an ear of corn, and an offering plate; a band of meander patterning below; the everted rim unglazed, with two low black-glazed loop handles, each with a central knop fashioned as a rosette; a similar knop either side of each handle. -

An important vesica seal matrix with complex design comprising a central agnus dei (Lamb of God) and Holy Grail within a circular border; male heads above and below, the upper tonsured and probably a portrait of Urban; the lower of a bearded saint, likely to be St Peter and with foliage within the spandrels; the circular panel with Gothic legend 'agnus:dei:qvitollis peccati mundi' (Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world) and inside 'urbanis:quintus' (Urban the Fifth) and to the outer band 'sancta:aualtane:martris. [foliage] et: cap:ila:beate:marie:de:scala:celi:' (Holy Mary, blessed, hallowed in heaven with the martyrs); the reverse with solder showing that a long rib and suspension was originally fitted. -

Chinese Fine Coral Figural Group Carving

A large and extremely finely carved double-armed coral branch; designed to be viewed in the round; the left-hand arm depicting, to the front, detailed foliage with flowers; a plume of feathers to the top; a naturalistically carved carp suspended, with integral loop, attached to a chain, the links carved from the same single piece of coral without joins; two youthful figures, one with elaborate jewellery, holding a ruyi sceptre; below, the other with hair in two buns, hands joined in a gesture of respect, seated on a large flower; at the base, a finely carved lotus. To the reverse of the left-hand branch, detailed foliage with flowers; a naturalistically carved carp; a small songbird perched on a branch. To the front of the right-hand branch, an adult figure, probably a Buddhist saint or deity, wearing a diadem and large earrings, a sphere in the right hand, the left hand stretched upwards, an urna to the forehead; draped in finely carved robes; above, an elaborate lotus with a small dog seated, and a youthful figure with elaborate hairstyle, in diving pose with the feet above, decorated boots to the feet, a small lotus in the right hand. To the reverse of the right-hand branch, a bearded dragon at the base; elaborately carved foliage above, with an ornate sceptre with ribbon decoration; a lotus flower; the carving mounted on wooden stand.
