BILLY AND CHARLEY - 19TH CENTURY FANTASY PENDANT - 'ARM AND KEY'
(70 grams, 90 mm.).

19th century AD. A lead badge with pelleted suspension loop. Obv: a radiate crowned facing bust with transverse sword with pseudo-legend and spurious date 1301. Rev: mailed fist holding key with pseudo-legend.

PROVENANCE:
Ex Doggett family; ex Lord Holland of Holland House, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1773-1840). This item, together with the Tutbury Hoard pennies and other coins offered elsewhere in this sale, passed to William ('Edgar') Doggett, the librarian at Holland House.

FOOTNOTES:
Sometimes known as the Shadwell Dock forgeries, these badges, with other articles, were the subject of much debate in the 19th century. Learned antiquaries of the day were fooled.
