British Celtic - Whaddon Chase Derivative - Gold Stater (?) > Lot No. 198
Description:
Circa 1st century BC. Whaddon Chase Type. Obv: degraded bust. Rev: realistic horse right above ground lines and with pellet-in-annulet symbol below.
Measurements:
2.25 grams.
Condition:
Fine. An interesting piece, worthy of further research.
References:
V. 1470-1 (for type); BMC 279-343.
Comments notes:
The flan size for this coin is consistent with staters but the weight, at 2.25 grams, is significantly below the normally expected range for staters and also substantially more than normal for the smaller-format quarter staters. It is possible that this coin might therefore be a contemporary copy.
Estimate: £150 - 250 (EUR 180 - 300; USD 240 - 400)
