ENGLISH MEDIEVAL EDWARD IV - LONDON - UNIQUE VARIANT HALFPENNY
(0.38 grams.).

1461-1464 AD. First reign, heavy coinage. Obv: facing bust with large annulet (slightly doubled) on neck and quatrefoil each side of bust and EDWARD REX ANGLE legend with pellet stop before REX and 'rose' mintmark, the rose with annulet at centre. Rev: long cross with three pellets in angles dividing CIVITAS LONDON legend for London mint. About very fine, with slightly ragged edge, some flatness to legends and small slit perforation to left of crown.

LITERATURE:
S. -; N. -.; appears to be unrecorded, unpublished and unique.

FOOTNOTES:
The combination of quatrefoils by the bust and a rose mintmark is well known for Edward IV (see S. 1990, etc.) but an annulet on the neck is a feature only seen on coins of Edward I, Edward III and Henry IV (and then on pennies). The Edward IV halfpenny of Type IV has an annulet each side of the neck in combination with a rose mintmark (see S. 1993). The form of the rose mintmark, having an annulet at the centre as on this coin, is also most unusual. Worthy of further research.
