(Copper-alloy, gilded and silvered with gemstones, 27.92 grams, 45.82 mm.).
Circa 5th-6th century AD. A developed form of the umbonate plate brooch comprising an elliptical plate with central black sub-conical gemstone surrounded by four flat-bed garnets set en cloison on a flat plate with three concentric ridges; between the ridges a series of triangular stamped decorative lines; pin missing, the reverse heavily silvered.

FOOTNOTES:
The standard form of umbonate brooch is a 2nd century Roman design, often conical with projecting lugs bearing inserts. The present piece is in the same tradition but with the inserts on the face of the plate.
