KASHMIRI LARGE HEAD OF THE BUDDHA WITH GARNET INLAY
2ND-3RD CENTURY AD OR LATER
23 1/2" (44 kg, 60 cm including stand).

A large and fine head of Lord Buddha; his face youthful, with large, almond-shaped eyes serenely lowered in meditation; an inlaid garnet urna to the forehead; the large ears with elongated lobes and discoid earrings; the long hair intricately styled, with a central topknot, wound-around braid and clearly detailed locks; to the neck, a wide band of quatrefoil motifs within conjoined rectangles; remnants of a larger background, possibly a nimbus, remaining; mounted on stand.

UK art market, acquired prior to 1985.
