ROMAN - BRONZE FIGURINE - MERCURY
(130 grams, 87 mm including base.).

2nd century AD. A good sized statuette, Mercury is depicted standing nude, with one leg slightly bent, a chlamys over one shoulder, wearing winged boots and holding a purse.

PROVENANCE:
Purchased from a Hertfordshire country house sale in the late 1980's; found Hertfordshire prior to 1980.

FOOTNOTES:
Mercury was the divine messenger and a god of commerce, the son of Maia Maiestas and Jupiter in Roman mythology.
