Description:
Circa 4th-5th century AD. A late Roman North African terracotta lamp; on the discus, a cockerel facing right in relief, surrounded by square and circular Christian symbols on the shoulders; a channel running between discus and nozzle edged by ridges.

Measurements:
105 grams, 111 mm.

Condition:
Chip to handle, otherwise very fine with sharp detail.

Provenance:
Ex Hornbeam collection.

Comments notes:
The image of the cockerel is associated with the god Mercury, the Herald of Dawn.
