WESTERN ASIATIC SUMERIAN ALABASTER WORSHIPPER FIGURINE
2400-2200 BC
6 1/4" (387 grams, 16cm).

A carved standing figure of a worshipper, hands clasped to the chest and beard resting on them, tufted kaunakes kilt, bare feet on a discoid base.

PROVENANCE:
Ex Delorme and Collin De Bocage, Paris, 5 December 2009, Lot 5 (with a copy of the catalogue extract); formerly in a French private collection, and previously a London private collection.

FOOTNOTES:
Statues such as this were placed in temples before the image of the deity in order to pray perpetually on behalf of the person it represented, who was considered to be physically present in the statue.
