ANCIENT GREEK COINS - THRACE - ISTROS - LYSIMACHUS - ATHENA NIKEPHOROS GOLD STATER
323-281 BC
(8.52 grams.).

Kyzikos mint. Obv: diademed head of deified Alexander right, wearing horn of Ammon. Rev: BASILEWS LYSIMAXOY legend with Athena Nikephoros seated left, holding Nike in extended right hand, left arm resting on shield; PS monogram in left field, tunny fish left in exergue. Extremely fine. Appears to be unpublished; unique?

PUBLISHED:
See Wildwinds.com (this coin).

LITERATURE:
Apparently unpublished as a stater; see Jenkins 39 variant (tetradrachm); Mionnet I, 73-75 variant (tetradrachm, monogram); Black Sea Hoard 397 variant (ditto); not in BMC, Müller, Thompson, AMNG, ANS, Pick, Newell, Price, Marinescu, hoard catalogs, etc.

FOOTNOTES:
The mint at Kyzikos is responsible for several issues with a variety of marks and symbols used; the tunny fish mark is recorded on tetradrachms but this seems to be the first appearance on a stater.
