ROMAN HEAD OF BACCHUS
2nd-3rd century AD

A marble head of Bacchus (Dionysus) with gently smiling face, soft features and large, expressive eyes; long hair pulled up into a knot at the front and held in place by a fillet with bunches of grapes and ivy leaves falling to the sides, to the back the hair tied in a knot; mounted on a custom-made stand. 10 kg, 30 cm including stand (12").

Property of a North London gentleman; formerly from a Mayfair gallery in the 1990s.
