ROMAN - BRONZE VOTIVE BULL

Circa 3rd century AD. A solid cast figure of a bull with horns, shoulder hump and dewlap; well modelled, standing on an integral rectangular base with corner feet. 48mm tall.

Condition
Very fine.

Old English collection.

Footnotes
The worship of Mithras was one of the official religions of the Later Roman period, especially popular with the army; its central rite was the despatch of a bull, which figures in Mithraic iconography.
