VIKING SILVER THOR'S HAMMER PENDANT
Circa 9th-11th century AD

A cast silver pendant in the form of a T-shaped hammer with tapering round-section shaft; the head decorated with a dense array of punched dot-in-triangle motifs extending to the lower shaft; a silver suspension ring inserted through the pierced finial. Silver, 15 grams, 43 mm (1 3/4").

Condition
Very fine condition.

Provenance
From an old European collection, acquired prior to 1990.

Footnotes
Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, was used to hallow the bride at wedding ceremonies and was worn in pendant form as a sign of faith during the Viking period.
